Andrea Contreras (B.S.H. '19)

Andrea Contreras was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico and is currently majoring in Earth Systems in the Oceans, Atmosphere, and Climate Track. She has been scuba diving for a decade and has worked in Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands to pilot citizen science initiatives and include more people into ocean information collection and conservation. She has worked with dive shops, schools, nonprofits, and government agencies to get people to take a lot of pictures of coral in order to better monitor these systems in order to give power and responsibility over reefs and their resources to San Juan locals directly impacted by reef degradation. On campus, she is deeply involved with Students for a Sustainable Stanford, and is currently working as the Co-director, and previously with community development for the club’s members and waste related initiatives.
