Daela Taeoalii-Tipton is a senior from Salt Lake City, Utah, in Earth Systems on the Land Systems track. However, her interests are far more than terrestrial. Being Pacific Islander, she has witnessed firsthand how climate change and food sovereignty have disproportionate impacts. These experiences both at home and abroad have motivated her to further understand the complexities and inequities within social-ecological systems. This has translated working with local and indigenous Hawaiians to achieve biocultural conservation goals aligned with community priorities, a capstone project partnered with Acterra, a community-based nonprofit in Palo Alto, focused on climate change literacy in East Palo Alto, and many other ventures. Her capstone involves developing novel curriculum, as well as organizing and coordinating with other local environmental non-profits to participate in the week-long program teaching their own modules which emphasize hands-on learning, critical thinking and decision-making, as well as community connection and youth leadership skills. Additionally, Daela is involved in a number of clubs and events on-campus that approach this issue from different angles (Earthtones, Stanford Oceans Society, Stanford Farmers, Hui O Na Moku, Stanford Outdoor Education).
