Sierra Garcia (B.S. '18)

Throughout her time at Stanford, Sierra has been committed to public service and environmental justice. Last year, she helped create and run an initiative to repurpose furniture items that students typically throw out when they leave dorms at the end of the year. Teaming up with Students for a Sustainable Stanford and the First-Generation/Low Income Partnership, she helped collect and save over 4,000 pounds of items in storage units for the summer, and at the beginning of this school year, she distributed these items to new students. Sierra has also been involved with the Stanford Project on Hunger (SPOON) for several quarters, where she assists with food waste pickups. Outside of her work with sustainability initiatives, Sierra has spent time tutoring for Habla La Noche, an adult ESL tutoring program, since the start of her freshman year. Sierra has also used her research experiences to pursue public service. Last spring and summer, she worked with Nicole Ardoin to investigate climate change communication in relation to the health of the iconic coast redwood in California’s state parks.
